Open the console by pressing ` [tilde] enter sv_cheats 1
then enter any of the following cheat codes:

Press [F12] and enter the following codes for the desired effect:

Type "zaphod" while playing the game.
Dev console will open.
Type your cheat and hit enter.
Console will close.
Open the console with the tilde key ("~") at any time after this.

Press [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[C] to bring up the command prompt anytime during gameplay
or furnish mode with few exceptions. Type any of the following cheat codes:
